The MLU
Several years ago on a trip through the hills of Georgia, Chris Rosser dubbed my Ford E150 conversion van: The Mobile Love Unit
This summer I decided to put the MLU back on the road. It's a beast -- white, hi-top, TV, VCR, blue pleated faux velvet interior complete with a fold down bed in the back, perfect for any Huggy Bear wannabe. Don't ask me why I bought it in the first place.
I was heading back to the University of Virginia where I teach every summer at the Young Writer's Workshops. After the workshop and the Falcon Ridge folk festival I decided to fly back home to Texas in August leaving the huge white eyesore in Mum and Dad’s driveway in MD. That turned out to be a mistake. Three attempts later after the New Song Festival, Katrina, and a Rachel Bissex tribute gig at Passim’s, I finally drove it back in late September. www.people.virginia.edu/~eds-yww/
Here’s a short list of stuff that’s been on mind since the drive.
JILL SCOTT
Gas was still about $3 per, as I heading south on 81 after visiting with Hannah Pelton at James Madison University. I popped in the new Jill Scott “Beautifully Human” and when I got to Golden my CD player got stuck. I had to keep listening and listening, finally getting to the place where I didn’t have to cry anymore. This song feels like the spiritual follow-up to Des’ree’s “You Gotta Be Strong”. It’s so overwhelmingly feel good, sexy, empowering, and groovy that the tears are simply an automatic response. http://www.jillscott.com/
DONNIE HATHAWAY
The only thing that could follow that is a little Donnie Hathaway – for my money the greatest singer that ever lived on this planet. I put on the new Rhino live release, and the CD got stuck on “You’ve Got a Friend” (my favorite version of Carol Kings’ song made famous by James Taylor). Cary will tell you, every time I hear a gospel choir, I am immobilized, transported to another world, and DH’s rendition invariably does that to me. I finally was able to move on to his cover of “Yesterday” once again taking me to a place of mourning for my marriage to Crystal. And then to the greatest vocal performance I’ve ever heard -- DH singing Leon Russell’s’ Song For You taking me back to a place of gratitude for my new life with Cary and the girls. (I actually prefer his studio version of this song) http://www.soultracks.com/donny_hathaway.htm
RILKE / MARY OLIVER
Two collections of poetry have been my companions this year. Rilke’s Book of Hours (my cousin Cynthi’s Christmas present to me) comforted me greatly in the months after Rachel’s passing – especially the one that starts with: “What will you do God when I die?” Go to Amazon and order it, you won’t be sorry. Mary Oliver’s “Why I Wake Early” has become my mantra. You can read the poem at: http://www.poetryconnection.net/poets/Mary_Oliver/17320
CHARLIE AND LOLA
Speaking of waking up early, I’ve been setting my alarm for 6:30 (that’s AM!) to be more supportive of Cary and the girls. I usually take Caroline to school around 7:30, then back home to take Hannah at around 8:45. I’ve become well acquainted with kids shows on TV in the last three years, but I’ve finally found one that I love. In fact it’s my favorite show period. Usually Hannah and I make coffee then we sit down for the 15 minute show together at 8:30 after which it’s time to go. If I’m late delivering Caroline she calls me on Cary’s cell because she knows I don’t want to miss my favorite show. I’m warning you, if you watch it you’ll be hooked. http://www.charlieandlola.com/
CRASH / BRIAN WILLIAMS
Two incredibly moving pieces about race. “Crash” by Don Cheadle and company might be the most even handed, disturbing, yet ultimately redeeming movies about race that I’ve ever seen. Rent it, but be prepared not to breathe after the movie … far be it from me to recommend a network newscaster, but Brian Williams documentary on Katrina makes an indelibly powerful case for examining race in America (despite the rather haughty review below). You can find it on the Sundance Channel. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/27/arts/television/27stan.html
DAVENDRA BANHART
I know nothing about this guy except what I heard and read on the site below, but it’s the next CD I’m going to buy. I’ll let you know how I like it.

SONGWRITING
I’ve been mulling over starting an on-line songwriting group. I’d like it to dovetail a little with a songwriters group Cary and I are hoping to start here in Dallas. We’re thinking of meeting once every other month, agreeing on a title, subject, or motif for our get togethers, and then playing the songs that result. If there was any interest I’d love to also put up MP3s of songs you might write on a new songwriters page at thedreamsicles.com.
I’m off to teach at Lamb’s Retreat in Michigan this weekend. If you’ve ever heard my song “Making Love” you might also remember that’s where I wrote it - at the prompting of John D. Lamb who is the director of the songwriting retreat. Hope to see some of you there. http://www.springfed.org/Songwriters.html

Make no mistake: Our mission at Tip Top Equities is to sift through the thousands of underperforming companies out there to find the golden needle in the haystack. A stock worthy of your investment. A stock with the potential for big returns. More often than not, the stocks we profile show a significant increase in stock price, sometimes in days, not months or years. We have come across what we feel is one of those rare deals that the public has not heard about yet. Read on to find out more.
Nano Superlattice Technology Inc. (OTCBB Symbol: NSLT) is a nanotechnology company engaged in the coating of tools and components with nano structured PVD coatings for high-tech industries.
Nano utilizes Arc Bond Sputtering and Superlattice technology to apply multi-layers of super-hard elemental coatings on an array of precision products to achieve a variety of physical properties. The application of the coating on industrial products is designed to change their physical properties, improving a product's durability, resistance, chemical and physical characteristics as well as performance. Nano's super-hard alloy coating materials were especially developed for printed circuit board drills in response to special market requirements
The cutting of circuit boards causes severe wear on the cutting edge of drills and routers. With the increased miniaturization of personal electronics devices the dimensions of holes and cut aways are currently less than 0.2 mm. Nano coats tools with an ultra thin coating (only a few nanometers in thickness) of nitrides which can have a hardness of up to half that of diamond. This has proven to increase tool life by almost ten times. Nano plans to continue research and development into these techniques due to the vast application range for this type of nanotechnology
We believe that Nano is a company on the move. With todays steady move towards miniaturization we feel that Nano is a company with the right product at the right time. It is our opinion that an investment in Nano will produce great returns for our readers.
