American striker Konrad de la Fuente has joined Greek club Olympiakos on a season-long loan from Marseille, the teams announced on Saturday.

The 21-year-old winger struggled with playing time and injuries last season in France, where he finished with one goal and three assists in 23 appearances.

Regular playing time in Greece could give De la Fuente an opportunity to earn a place with the United States for the World Cup, which begins on November 20.

Miami-born De la Fuente has made three international appearances, including two in the World Cup qualifiers last September. He made his debut for the US national team in November 2020 at an exhibition in Wales. He played for the Americans at the Under-20 World Cup in 2019.

He signed a four-year contract with Marseille last summer after joining Barcelona, where he played in the Spanish side’s youth system and made his senior debut in a Champions League match against Dynamo Kyiv on November 24, 2020.

De la Fuente’s only goal for Marseille was against Azerbaijan’s Qarabag in the Europa Conference League on February 24. It turned out to be his last game of the season due to a knee injury which then-coach Jorge Sampaoli said required surgery.
