An exquisite Olmec standing figure … Pre-Columbian stone | Lot # 70171

The description

An exquisite Olmec standing figure
Mexico, ch. 900-300 BC AD, Middle Preclassic Period

Translucent blue-green jade with high polish, residue of inlay material in the eyes. Standing figure with a large oval shaped head with almond-shaped eyes, a flattened nose and full lips. The head rests firmly on the sloping shoulders, which emphasizes the exaggerated size of the head. The shape of the head testifies to the cranial deformation practiced by the elites. The shoulders are rounded, the arms hang down to the side of the character and the legs are spread apart. This little figure has finely carved details: fine incisions mark the joints of the arms and legs, fingers, breasts, loincloth, buttocks and toes. Tapered piercings at the earlobes. In excellent condition. A dimple on the crown of the head with rough edges is original to the piece. The Olmec lapidaries often left a small area unfinished above the heads of human stone figures. These areas are usually dimple shaped and often reveal an unpolished section of the original stone used to carve the sculpture. With a metal stand.

The Olmec figures carved from translucent blue-green jade bear witness to astonishing beauty, and some have been found as a heirloom in later Mesoamerican cultures.
