Jean Smart Hacks 2021 Emmy Winner: Second Oldest Comedy Actress Winner

Smart jeans turned 70 on September 13 and received a late present Sunday night. As expected, she won the Emmy for Best Comedic Actress for “Hacks” and is now the second oldest winner in the category.

Smart dethroned 2020 champion Catherine o’hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) in more ways than one, as O’Hara became the second oldest winner at 66 years, 6 months, 17 days at last year’s Emmy night. Neither Smart nor O’Hara come close to the oldest winner in the category, Ruth gordon, who was 82 years, 10 months and 11 days when she triumphed for “Taxi” in 1979. That’s not all as Gordon was also born in the 19th century (1896).

Gordon’s victory, however, is marked with an asterisk. The Oscar-winning actress and screenwriter was just a guest star on “Taxi” and won for the only episode she appeared in during the show’s five seasons (Carol kane was also a guest star “Taxi” who won this category in 1982 before becoming a regular in the series). So if you don’t count Gordon, Smart is the longest-serving comedy actress who was a series regular on her show.

This is the fourth career Emmy for Smart, who joins Betty Blanche as the only people to have won in the leading, supporting and guest roles in comedy. She won two consecutive guest trophies in 2000 and 2001 for “Frasier” and a supporting statuette in 2008 for “Samantha Who? After the premiere of “Hacks” in May, Smart quickly rose to the top of comedy actresses for her turn as Deborah Vance, a legendary comedienne who hires a young writer titled (Hannah einbinder) to refresh its hardware. “Hacks” received 15 nominations, making it the second most nominated comedy this year behind “Ted Lasso”.

It’s probably not surprising that Smart is the oldest contender in its class. Allison janney (“Mom”), who was in fourth place, is 61 years old. Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”) was in third place and is the third oldest at 48 years old. Kaley cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), whom Smart knocked down for first place, is 35 years old and Aidy bryant (“Shrill”), who was fifth, is the youngest at 34.
