Marilyn Kay Shumate | The everyday world
Rochester’s Marilyn Kay Shumate passed away on Monday September 6, 2021 at Providence St Peter Hospital. She was 85 years old.
Marilyn was born on August 9, 1936 to Wilbur and Adelaide (Baker) O’Neall in Bellingham, Washington, where she graduated in 1955. Then, one fine day in Coos Bay, Oregon, Marilyn married William Erick Shumate. William predeceased her to death on August 20, 2021.
She is survived by her children: Ernest Shumate of Hoquiam, Richard Shumate of Benton City, Tammy Shumate of Rochester and Karalee Skye of Rochester; sister Judy (Vic) Rogers of Coos Bay, Oregon; half-sister Joyce Carey of Bellingham; 18 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Her half-brother Bill Carey is predeceased by her death.
In 1989, Marilyn opened Destinations Unlimited Travel Service in Tumwater, Washington. She then retired in 2003. Around this time, Marilyn and William loaded up their camper van and traveled across the United States. They loved all of their adventures together and were always eager to plan the next trip.
Marilyn loved spending time with her loving husband and family during her retirement. She was often found in the garden, painting ceramics and planning the next trip to play bingo. She was a collector of bells and cat figurines.
Funeral services with military honors for Marilyn and William will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at the Masonic cemetery of Elma. A meeting at Tammy’s Ceramic Shop in Rochester will follow immediately.
