US Department of Education Announces Changes to Civil Service Loan Forgiveness Program – CBS Pittsburgh

WASHINGTON (KDKA) – Help is on its way for more than half a million people with student loan debt.

This follows an announcement by the US Department of Education that they are making changes to the troubled civil service loan cancellation program.

The program will affect people working in government nonprofit sectors with federal student loans. This includes first responders, nurses and teachers.

People working in these industries will be eligible for student debt relief after making monthly payments for 10 years.

“This program was broken. More than nine out of 10 borrowers have been turned down and it has been going on for years, ”said Seth Frotman, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center.

The program was created by Congress in 2007 and has been criticized for its navigational difficulty and problems, including confusion over eligibility requirements.
